VISUAL ART COURSES DESCRIPTIONS 

Visual Art 8: Rotation 

This short sampler course is part of the Fine Arts rotation where students have an opportunity to explore dance, art,drama, and choir. In the visual art portion students will have an opportunity to experiment with a variety of media and techniques in a series of quick projects.
Students will have the opportunity to learn some basic techniques to discover and build upon artistic skills they already possess. 

Visual Art 9 

In this course, students will explore the potential of images and artworks as a means of self-expression and communication.  Students will have the opportunity to learn basic techniques and build foundational skills in a broad range of media. While the course will focus more on experimentation and discovery, students will start developing more formal techniques in a variety of media, such as graphite pencils, conte, watercolour, and clay.

 

You do not need to have taken Visual Art 8 to be successful in this course.  

Visual Art Studio 10 

In this course, students will explore the potential of images and artworks as a means of self-expression and communication. Students will have the opportunity to learn basic techniques and build foundational skills in a broad range of media. While the course will focus more on experimentation and discovery, students will start developing more formal techniques in a variety of media, such as graphite pencils, conte, watercolour, and clay.  

 

This course is suited for all levels. You do not need to have taken Visual Art 9 or Visual Art 8 to be successful in this course.

Grade 11 Courses 

In grade 11 students will continue exploring the many possibilities of art as a means of communication as they begin to intentionally create meaning and mood in their artworks. Students may choose to enrol in Studio Art 2D, Studio Art 3D or Studio Art and may take one, two or all three of the grade 11 art courses. 

 

In order for, students to be successful, it is STRONGLY recommended that artists have completed at at least one of Visual Art Studio 9 or Visual Art Studio 10 courses or approach Ms. Bielus to discuss their interest in the course as grade 11 course will build upon technical skills develop in grade 9 and 10 classes

Studio Arts 2D 11

Studio Arts  3D 11

Students interesting in creating two dimensional works such as painting, drawing, mixed media and printmaking will have an opportunity to continue exercising their creativity and expand on their technical skills while exploring new processes and avenues of expression in 2D areas such as ink, chalk, conte, watercolour, acrylic painting, mixed media.

This is a hands-on course where students will have the opportunity to both enhance their creativity and focus on developing 3D skills.
 
Students will be exposed to a variety of sculptural processes including construction, carving, and modelling. Students will explore contemporary and traditional 3D art such as ceramics (clay), found objects, mixed media, and installation art.  

In order to be successful, it is recommended that students have taken Visual Art Studio 10 or Visual Art Studio 9 have discussed their interest in the course with the instructor.

Studio Art 11

Students in this course will have an opportunity to explore BOTH 2D and 3D works through a series of projects.

Students will have an opportunity to continue exercising their creativity and expand on their technical skills while exploring new processes and avenues of expression in 2D areas such as ink, chalk, conte, watercolour, acrylic painting, mixed media and 3D such as installation, sculpture, clay and mixed media

Grade 12 Courses 

In grade12 students will further  discover and explore their own artistic voice. Exploring how art can be used as a tool for communication and self expression. Students will work through a series of projects where they will consider their own choice of media and message in relation to a theme.

 

Students who are planning to apply to a post-secondary art school will be given opportunities to build their portfolio for application.

In this course, students will expand and apply skills learned in the Visual Art 11 courses while beginning to discover and explore their own artistic voice. Students will work through a series of projects where they will consider their own choice of media and message in relation to a theme.

 

Students will have an opportunity to create 2D projects in painting, drawing, mixed media and printmaking.

This is a hands-on course where students will have the opportunity to both enhance their creativity and focus on developing 3D skills.
